Broadcast news

February 18, 2013

The Indians recently released their broadcast schedule for 2013, and it’s worth taking a few minutes to mull over.

As was previously announced by the team, all 162 regular season games will be broadcast on the radio by WTAM, 1100 AM. Tom Hamilton and Jim Rosenhaus will once again be behind the microphones. All but 18 regular season games will also be simulcast on WMMS, 100.7 FM.

In addition to these two flagship stations, the games will also be broadcast by about two dozen AM and FM radio affiliates throughout the state of Ohio, as well as one in Erie, Pennsylvania. You can find the list of affiliates here.

The regular season games will be televised on basic cable channel SportsTime Ohio, commonly known as STO. Led by the team of Matt Underwood, Rick Manning, and Al Pawlowski, STO will televise all but three games. Four of the STO games will also be televised on WKYC, Channel 3 (down from 20 games in 2012). On Saturday, June 15, and Saturday, June 22, the games will be televised by Fox Sports.

Last year, 155 of the 162 regular season games were televised. This year, all but one will be, that being the game of Saturday, July 13 against the Kansas City Royals, in Kansas City. Why this game is dark is beyond me, especially since STO is televising the Friday and Sunday games on either side of this one. I hope that Ubaldo Jimenez doesn’t pick this as the day to pitch the no-hitter we all know he has in him!

As Stephanie recently covered in her post “A Guide To Spring Training” some spring training games will be broadcast over radio on WTAM, WMMS, and 99X. The rest will be available via MLB.com. The first chance you’ll get to see a televised spring training game is on Monday, March 11, when the Major League Baseball Network (MLBN) will run a delayed edition of that day’s game against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The first real-time television broadcast of a spring training game will happen on Sunday, March 17, when STO will air the game between the Indians and the Cincinnati Reds.

As for the 2013 Indians postseason schedule . . . well, let’s just hold off on that for the time being.
