A few odds and ends…

November 30, 2012

Welcome Blake Wood

The Indians signed right-handed pitcher Blake Wood to a one-year contract to avoid arbitration. We claimed him off waivers on November 2. Wood spent the last two seasons with the Kansas City Royals (who drafted him in the 3rd round of the 2006 Amateur Draft). He has a career 4.30 ERA, 1.458 WHIP, and .7 WAR in two seasons in the majors. This news does not excite me.

Love me non-tender…

Today is the deadline for teams to tender a contract to arbitration-eligible players. If the player does not receive a contract, he joins the free agent pool.

Mike Aviles, $1.2 million in 2012, 4.091 years of service
Shin-Soo Choo, $4.9 million in 2012, 5.119 years of service
Jack Hannahan, $1.135 million in 2012, 4.065  years of service
Lou Marson, $491.700 in 2012, 3.036 years of service
Justin Masterson, $3.825 million in 2012, 4.108 years of service
Chris Perez, $4.5 million in 2012, 4.136 years of service
Tony Sipp, $504,900 in 2012 3.138 years of service
Joe Smith, $1.75 million in 2012 5.091 years of service

Pitcher Rafael Perez’s contract is also up, but he’s been designated for assignment to AAA Columbus. We can still trade him, but he could also be released. Perez was DFA’d to make room on the roster for Nick Hagadone, who is apparently healed (and hopefully repentant) after punching a wall with his pitching hand after a bad outing.

Oh yeah, and in case you missed it, Brent Lillibridge was also DFA’d. He politely declined and is now a free agent.
