The Indians announced today that outfielder Ezequiel Carrera had been optioned to the AAA Columbus Clippers following yesterday’s loss to the Red Sox. Carrera made his major league debut on May 20, the same day he was recalled. In his first-ever major league at-bat, he pinch-hit an RBI bunt single to score the game’s winning run in the 8th inning against the Cincinnati Reds. In total, Carrera appeared in five games, going 2-8 with 2 RBI. This season at Columbus, he’s hit .317 945-142) with 33 runs scored, 5 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, and 17 RBI in 31 games.

Originally part of a 2008 three-team trade between the Indians, Mets, and Mariners, the Indians acquired Carrera and minor leaguer Juan Diaz (currently playing for the Class A Lake County Captains) for Russell Branyan. Sending Carrera back to Columbus opens up a roster spot that will likely be filled by activating Grady Sizemore off the 15-day disabled list sometime this weekend. I’d love to see Carrera up here again. I  liked his speed in the outfield and on the base paths. And while I’ll be happy to see Sizemore in the lineup again, I hope he isn’t being rushed off the DL. Watching Talbot struggle in yesterday’s blow-out against the Red Sox, I got the feeling he was taken off the DL too soon. He had a four-inning rehab start with the Clippers; maybe he should have had another start or two down there. With the amazing start this team has had in the first third of the season, I can see how management would be eager to keep the momentum going. But we need these arms and knees (and other body parts) for the rest of the season and the playoffs (there, I said it. I believe the Indians are going to the playoffs this year). Please don’t rush the injured body parts.

Great headline! — must’ve taken a while — and some assistance — to come up with it.
