The Indians have now signed four free agents named Dave, the latest being RHP David Aardsma, who spent most of 2013 in the Mets bullpen. Aardsma, 32, had a 4.31 ERA in 43 appearances (39.2 innings pitched). He also stranded all 19 of the runners he inherited, for the best ratio in the majors. Aardsma has the minor league contract with a non-roster invite to major league spring training. He joins David Cooper, David Murphy, and David Adams in the Dave Club. Is this too many Daves? Will Terry Francona start calling one of them one of them Sir Michael Carmichael Zutt, and one of them Oliver Boliver Butt, and one of them Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate? We shall see.

In the non-Dave category, the Tribe signed free agent catcher Luke Carlin to a Minor League Contract with a non-roster invitation to Major League spring training camp. Carlin, 33, spent the 2010-2012 seasons as a Columbus Clipper and a Cleveland Indians (mostly the former). Most recently, he played with the AAA Salt Lake Bees (Angels organization), where he hit .230 (56-244) with 8 doubles, 4 HR, and 29 RBI.

Other recent non-roster invites have been extended to infielder Francisco Lindor, catcher Jake Lowery, outfielder Tyler Naquin, catcher Robert Perez, infielder Joey Wendle, and catcher/infielder Tony Wolters.  Naguin, Wendle, Cloyd, and Lowery are also among the top prospects who will be participating in the Indians Winter Development Program, which begins Monday, January 27 at Progressive Field.

The invite lost is now as long than the standard second grader’s birthday party invite list at Zero Gravity.

Aaah, I see you’re finally coming around to my Dave-centric theory!

Considering that the Indians already have several made-up names or great nicknames (Tony Plush and Chicken Al to the Governor of Brohio and Doctor Smooth), I like the idea of making up new names for all the Daves.
