This afternoon the Indians square off against the Twins in the series finale as Ubaldo Jimenez takes on Scott Diamond.  Jimenez had a great outing last Tuesday against the White Sox, allowing just 2 ER on 5 hits over 6.1 innings pitched.  The real fireworks came later in the game after Jimenez left, but he had a solid start and received a nice ovation from the crowd.  Jimenez has only faced the Twins one time this season – on August 23 he took the loss in a 5-1 game, despite giving up just 2 ER on 5 hits over 6 innings pitched.

Diamond took the loss in his last outing on September 24 against the Detroit Tigers, as he gave up 4 ER on 9 hits over 6.1 innings pitched.  He’s faced the Indians one time this season, back on July 21 when he gave up 5 ER on 7 hits over 4.2 innings pitched in a 7-1 loss.  The Indians have done well against left-handed pitchers this year (especially when compared to last year) so it would be great to continue the trend this afternoon.

still against starting UJ in this game….we can win without him….now the WC starter is a crapshoot…

dunno stu, if we don’t win and we end up in a 3way, i think we would constantly come back to not playing it with the hot hand. why not just go for the shut down

  • Alex says:

How is the WC game starter not Salazar? He’s definitely the next best option we have. Even on his limited pitch count, we can burn through our bullpen and give them a few days’ rest before the ALDS if necessary. I think we’re ok, Stu

So the Tigers just lost, Alvarez got a no-hitter against them (the Marlins’ only run came on a wild pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth). Their closer blew a save last night, which led to a loss. They got SWEPT by the Marlins. Sure, they rested a lot of their starters, but shouldn’t they still be good enough to beat the Marlins?

If the Indians win today, they’ll finish behind the Tigers by only ONE game. They went 4-15 against the Tigers. Imagine if they had only gone, say, 7-12…

it’s just we didnt need a big gun to win this game…i dont want a rookie on the hill in a must win game….my 2 cents

    • D.P. Roberts says:

I agree with your thinking, but on the other hand, if they can use Salazar (or anybody) on Wednesday, and win, that leaves Jimenez available to pitch Game 1 of the series against Boston, and game 5. If you use him on Wednesday, he only pitches 1 game in the next series.

Of course, it’s all moot if the Indians lose Wednesday, but you’d hope that at least ONE of our pitchers (Z-Mac, Salazar, or Kluber) could give us a chance to win the Wild Card game at home on Wednesday.

i don’t know about you guys but i don’t really trust kluber and zmac as much as i did before they hit the DL. i would put sal in on a short leash

  • Seattle Stu says:

a 5 game series is a luxury…guys, it’s ONE AND DONE…you have to win that game.

  • Seattle Stu says:

and we just put 5 runs on twins…you dont think another starter could have held Minn to less?

  • D.P. Roberts says:

Tampa just won, time to go root for the Tigers.

Well here we are. A 92 win season, only a game behind the Tigers, the FIRST wild card spot, and most importantly…BASEBALL IN OCTOBER! Yes!

  • Nikki says:

Seeing them celebrate on the field will never get old! I could go for seeing this a few more times this October, boys! 😀

Swisher and Jimenez have been money in September. They stepped up big time. 10 wins in a row, 92 for the year. Wow. I just wish we had a #1 starter for Wednesday’s game. We used our two best starters in today’s game, so I share Stu’s concern there. But with the way the team is playing, there really isn’t one guy they are relying on. It’s been a total team effort.

  • Seattle Stu says:

think we’re pulling for TEX win so they both burn a strong starter….

  • Leo says:

On normal rest I think it’ll be Perez and Price. Be great to get shot of both these.

  • Jami says:

any more thoughts on the starter for Wednesday?

  • Pat S says:

So I just got an update on my phone that Salazar will start Wednesday…Bold move to put a rookie out there but if he comes through that could jump start a great career for this kid! Then you have the great problem of choosing between Z-Mac, Kluber, Salazar and Kazmir for the last 3 spots of the rotation. I’m not only excited about the playoffs but the future as well!
