So first of all, the DirectTV reference cracked me up!

One thing I completely forgot about is that Ubaldo is under team control, whether or not they picked up his option. They just would have gone to arbitration with him, and then it would have been an issue on whether or not his raise would be more than the option. They would have had to release him outright to get rid of him completely.

And speaking of train wrecks, I saw that the Royals traded for Ervin Santana. I was a little afraid the Indians may go for him, but he seems as unpredictable as Ubaldo and Fausto. The Angels also considering trading Dan Haren, which is a much more intriguing option. He may cost more, and has issues with injuries, but is good when healthy. I may put together a post on the possibility at some point, when I get a few minutes of extra free time!

Cut them all loose. Though I think Haf coming back at a reduced price couldn't hurt. Hernandez will sign a reduced deal with the Indians because I don't think even one other team will sniff at him. I agree with Steve that $5.75M is a bit too steep for apologetic reasoning on a trade. $5.75M is like 3-5 mediocre guys or one decent one or combined with the "savings" from the above guys a really good one.

When Pomeranz improves his command, he will dominate. When Pomeranz dominates, the Ubaldo trade will go down as one of the worst in team history. When the trade goes down as the worst in team history, fans will get upset. When fans get upset, mistakes happen. When mistakes happen, you end up with an eye patch. When you get an eye patch, people want to see how tough you are, and you end up in a roadside ditch. Don't end up in a roadside ditch.

As bad as Jimenez was in 2012, it was the worst season of his career. Furthermore, he has been injury-free in every season since 2008, where he made 30+ starts in each season. So, for $5.75M do you take the bate and keep him as 4th/5th starter? I think you do. Starting pitchers are pricy.

But it is really sad that the Indians traded two pitchers who projected to 2nd/3rd starter and 2 other prospects for a guy who may end up as 5th starter. Say what you want about White and Pomerantz but White was destined to fail as a flyball pitcher in Coors Field and Pomerantz was brought on too early because the Rockies pitching made the Indians' look good! I was happy that the Indians made the trade when they did, but I do regret it now. I would be more optimistic about 2013 if we still had White and Pomerantz to go with Hernandez, McAllister, and Masterson.

HA! I'm kind of glad that Doug Mientkiewicz retired before I started to blog.

They may decide to keep Jimenez because they honestly believe they can fix him, but that seems kind of like wishful thinking at this point. And you're right, wishful thinking does seem to govern everything they do lately.

I feel even worse for Sizemore if he has to miss another full year. I really hope (for his sake) that this isn't the end for him.

I didn't realize Kotchman's WAR was that bad until after the season ended. I started tinkering around with a post on the most/least valuables on the team and saw it. He also had a -1.1 WAR in 2010, but it was around 3+ during his good year with the Rays in 2011.

What's worse, making a bad decision or making a bad decision for the wrong reason? Picking up Jimenez because you aren't ready to admit your mistake yet just consigns the team to another lost year. The only reason to pick up his option is because you have some reasonable basis in fact for believing that he can improve next season. Notice that I didn't say basis in hope, which seems to govern everything this team does lately. As for Grady, I'm hearing talk that he might have to miss another full year rehabbing his injuries before he can return. That would make it tough for the Indians to guarantee any money. I didn't realize Kotchman's WAR was that bad. Lost amid his .220 batting average was the career-high 5 errors. He only had 11 errors in 8 years coming in, so he wasn't exactly Doug Mientkiewicz this year either. (Yes, I had to look up the spelling)
