how is joe smith the worst bullpen pitcher? aside from chris perez and vinnie pestano (yes, i said that), he’s been our best bullpen pitcher. 2nd highest LOB%, 2nd lowest FIP (both to vinnie). i definitely agree, carmona needs to go, but sending joe smith away is not the answer.

Bring Jeanmar Gomez up. Send our worst bullpen pitcher(Joe Smith) to Columbus. Put Carmona in Smith’s spot. Give it a try!

I’ve thought for a while that the Indians are psychologically not ready for major leagues. Though the relief pitching this year has been generally good for the last several years the team’s bullpen has started too many innings by putting men on base. The team’s hitters fail to make contact with runners in scoring position. The Indians seem to consistently lead the league in baserunning mistakes (in a tie game in the bottom of the ninth why does Choo try to steal second with no outs? why does Hafner try for an extra base – ever?) As an organization Cleveland lacks in the fundamentals. Part – much? of that is the manager. Against Colorado Carmona should have been pulled as soon as he loaded the bases in the fifth. He should have been pulled before he gave up the homerun, he should have been pulled before he gave up the double, he should have been pulled before he walked in a batter – because as has been pointed out when he loses control he’s gone. Unless Acta had decided that Fausto was going to “take one for the Team” as KC management decided early in the year, no responsible manager leaves Carmona’s body on the mound once his mind has gone away.

Carmona has had one brilliant year, when I think he should have won the Cy Young instead of Sabbathia. Otherwise, he is worth more to the Indians in trade than as a teammate.

I’ve always been very high on Jeanmar Gomez (ever since his perfect game with Akron in 2009), but he seems to struggle every time he’s brought up to the Majors. He’s been solid with Columbus since he went down, so as far as I’m concerned it’s worth a shot.

I remember hearing rumbles prior to the season that the Yankees inquired about Carmona after they missed out on the Cliff Lee sweepstakes. I can’t imagine he would’ve succeeded in a high pressure situation like New York, but at that point he wouldn’t have been the Indians problem anymore!

Unfortunately, I do remember that Carmona was pretty terrible outside of game 2 of the ALDS…he was pretty bad against Boston. (I think I sort of block it out sometimes!) I guess you could say the 2007 playoffs are vintage Carmona – brilliant one day, terrible the next. (And you see terrible Carmona more often than good Carmona). And I agree about Sizemore…I’ve completely lost patience with him. (BTW, love “K’smore) Those home run stats are pretty amazing. I guess I didn’t realize that such a large percentage were solo shots.

I don’t want to ruin your fond memory of the fall of 2007, but the composite for the 2007 playoffs was really bad for Carmona. 3 games pitched – 15 innings, 12 earned runs, 11 walks and a 7.20 ERA!! I agree with Ben that we should trade Caromona. Perhaps, another team can get his head straight. He is reminding me of Albie Lopez, another pitching prospect that never panned out. And while we are at it, we should trade Grady K’smore before he gets hurt again. Although, I have never liked teams that depend on home runs in order to score, here are some HR stats, I gathered on the Tribe. Total HRs by month – Apr: 34 (22 solo), May: 17 (13 solo): June so far: 12 (8 solo).

I am genuinely at the point of no return with this guy. Why he hasn’t been traded in the last few years is beyond me. He will never return to 2007 form, and the fact that we are still starting (and paying) him for those successes is laughable. Trade him before the deadline, pick up someone else who can cover for White while he is down, and then sink or swim on that rotation. Can’t get any worse, can it??

Agreed. Things have tightened up too much in our division for us to carry someone who can’t seem to get it done. Unfortunately, the Tribe front office must not think that they have any other options (especially with Alex White on the DL)
