Thanks for the details of that historic 1940 opening day. What many forget was the sad ending to that very 1940 season. This was the summer of "Vitt's Crybabies," the revolt of 11 Tribesmen including Feller against Oscar Vitt, the colorful manager who blamed in print many Indians players for this defeat or the next. It was a close 3-team race with Tigers and Yanks. The race came down the final weekend when the Tribe needed to sweep a
3-game series vs. Detroit to win the pennant. Feller pitched the opening game against a rookie Tiger lefty, Floyd Geibell. Geibell threw an unexpected gem in winning 2-0 when Rudy York hit a homer. This was Geibell's 3rd and final victory of his major league career. The Tribe won the final two meaningless games to end up a single game out of 1st place while the Yanks were 2 games out. Combined with the 1908 season when Ty Cobb's Tigers ended up winning the AL pennant by one-half game over "It's pronounced Lajaway's" Clevelanders (they didn't make up rained-out games back then), that's a mere 1 1/2 games over two seasons that kept Cleveland out of a World Series!

We should be so lucky this season.
