yeah that makes sense. Midseason is probably the best time to trade a closer when teams get desperate. In the offseason there always seems to be a solid group of closer candidates available.

Yeah, I have no objection to Chris Perez being traded. I had some objection to his being traded during this past off-season though, just because it seemed like the market was too saturated with closers. I felt like they could hang onto him until there was more demand and get a better return.

Ryan, I was talking with that same college friend that I mentioned in my article, and when he asked me about a pitcher similar to Chris Perez, I said Billy Koch. When I read that you wrote that, I laughed out loud. So happy I was not the only one who sees those parallels. I just see Pestano as someone who has the legitimate closer stuff, and I sort of feel like Perez is blocking Pestano’s development. I would love to see Pestano get some early saves depending on Perez’s health and effectiveness.

I’d be fine with trading Perez for a legitimate bat if they can pull it off. I buy into Billy Beane’s belief that closers grow on trees, mostly because they’re used so inefficiently. Plus, Perez seems more Billy Koch than Trevor Hoffman. Pestano steps up at closer, R.Perez/Sipp/Smith handle 7th/8th inning duties, with Hagadone and CC Lee in the minors waiting to join the group maybe later this year or in 2013.
