When Thome left he took a little part of me with him so I share the anger and frustration. There are differing versions of what transpired but from a team standpoint his worsening back was likely a major issue for any long term deal.

I think the Indians may have re-signed him this past winter despite Hafner (and maybe because of Hafner and his DL stints). His presence on a contending team (we hope)would have been a large benefit.

I guess Charlie Manuel and the chase for a ring were too much. Thanks for the comment.

I still don’t know where I stand on him. on the one hand I am still furious he left a fortune in Cleveland for a slightly bigger fortune somewhere else after all the love and adoration he was shown here for a very long time, especially after all the ‘aw shucks I just wanna play baseball and your such great fans’ stuff, on the other hand he’s an important link to our past.

On some inner level I think Thome wanted to make amends, and did. The first leaving was unnecessarily ugly.

I was at appreciation night and it was quite a thrill do have Thome jack one.
I was shocked by the whole statue announcement as well.

I was also at Jim Thome bobblehead day in his last season before he went FA when he hit a pinch hit home run to win the game in extra innings .He seems to have a penchant for doing things on a stage.

Thome left for Philadelphia for two reasons:
His wife(a former Miss Ohio) was offered a job on a Philly television station(she had recently lost her Cleveland gig) .
An extra year on his contract at essentially the same per year deal the Tribe offered.
