It was a frustrating off-season for all of us Tribe fans, but I would rather pin my hopes on the impact of Kipnis,Chisenhall,Santana,Jimenez and a return to at least decent health, than on some of the mediocre hitters that were given nice deals in this years free agency circus. If they wait to add a bat during the season it could have a greater impact than a Cuddyer or a Willingham now.

Fielder is a small boost for Detroit in terms of wins over VMart, but I would hesitate to pick any team that has to out slug that defense as a sure fire division winner.Let's face it, everything went right for them last season till they ran into the Rangers.

As for Carmona,I seriously don't care if I ever see him pitch again.Talk about frustrating!....I think giving any of the guys at AAA.(McAllister Gomez,Huff,Barnes) his starts would yield better results.

I don't want Lee or Kotchman, I'd give Laporta another go before signing them for anything more than peanuts.

I think they've done a nice job fleshing out the AAA club with former major leaguers so if we see another attack of injuries it shouldn't be catastrophic.

We've ponied up for our season ducats again and at least we're excited about the season if not the off season.GO TRIBE!

Well written post. Word seems to be that Ilitch knows he doesn't have much time left and just wants his GD ring. If only all of us fans could just go buy Fielder in that case, huh? It brings up the age-old fan question - would you trade 20 years of guaranteed awfulness for one championship ring? Or would you choose that those 20 years would usually be competitive, sometimes less than good, and you MAY win a championship? As a true baseball, compeltely long-term objective signing, the Fielder deal was bad for Detroit. As a "Let's! Win! NOW!" deal it was a good one, especially when you pair him with Miggy in that lineup and Verlander on the hill - and the rest of their rotation isn't half bad.

Comments on comments:

@Drew and Stephanie: funny, I've had that same discussion with people. Clevelanders shall NEVER take off their rosy specs.

@Will - agreed. If we're going to make a move for Ubie, we need to do SOMETHING else. We do have a chance...if we do something. Matt LaPorta's VORP (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/sortable/index.php?cid=1012598) was .1. Not anything point one, point one. Number 572 amongst ALL batters, including pitchers! Heck, we could play Lowe at 1B - he had a 6.2 BVORP. His is the lowest VORP of any player with as many plate appearances. His season was an offensive disaster, period, much less for a 1B.

The constant bottom feeding and 'depth' trolling wears thin, especially after selling the Jimenez trade as an aggressive all in necessity for the perceived winning window of 2012-2014 (before Choo, Asdrubal, etc leave town). If we're all in for the window why aren't we actually doing anything?

I like the Ray signing and Slowey (if healthy) might actually be an an upgrade. Cuddyer and Willingham were dreams although Cuddyer may have been the one worth making happen (versatility at 1B and great clubhouse leadership). Watching Cody Ross sign for 3 million without an apparent sniff from the Tribe (good splits v LHs) makes one wonder if the suits don't outthink or limit themselves with preconceptions.

Tepid, at best. If this is what we can expect, why trade Pomeranz at all?

Totally agree with the entire entry. Martinez is one of my favorite players, so while I immediately realized it improved the Tribe's chances within the division, I was saddened. Nonetheless, the signing of Fielder, for the short term (i.e., 4 yrs) is disheartening. That's a big solid stick who should be able to bang in Det.

Trying to stay positive, I remind myself that the fans that are excited in the offseason (of any sport but bball) are rarely the ones happy come playoff time. Det still has some big pitching issues IMHO, both in the starting rotation and in the bullpen. Obviously, they think the offense can overcome that and it very well may.....but the games aren't played on paper!

I hope Derrek Lee won't take the Jermaine Dye route, but he's definitely threatening to do so.

Matt LaPorta drives me absolutely insane, but when I try to take a look at his numbers in an unbiased manner, they're not that awful. I'd be okay with him at first, but I really hoped for a free agent signing to maybe light a fire under him.

I've thought that myself about Heredia...that has to be a lot of additional pressure maintaining that lie all of those years. Especially if you're being pressured by the real Fausto Carmona back in the Dominican Republic to cough up more money, or risk having your secret exposed.

Do you think Derrek Lee will follow the same career-ending trend as Jermaine Dye? I know that Matt LaPorta frustrates everyone, but he is very good defensively. And with all the sinker-ball pitchers that the Indians have, it will be important to have a solid infield. An effective Heredia would only exasperate these circumstances. I am going to take the glass half-full approach with him; Fausto/Roberto was being consumed emotionally by his duel personality in which it was actually Fausto who was the bizarro Roberto. In 2007, Roberto was pitching, not Fausto. Since then, he has become emotionally-drained at the prospect of keeping his identity hidden. Now the secret is out, he can pitch like he did in 2007 again!

Hmmm, interesting. I could totally understand choosing Tampa, since he played there for a number of years. If the Indians offered more (or never officially offered anything) it gets a bit more intriguing.
