I read a story on Score several years ago in which he said he first injured his arm in spring training when he returned after the injury. I think of him when I hear fans complain about how pitchers are "babied" today. What a tragedy to such a great guy.

I know a few people who were actually in attendance in the game, and they were almost positive he died after he fell to the ground. I'm sure that a lot of people in Cleveland were thinking about Ray Chapman (killed by a pitch in 1920) when it happened.

By the way - I love that you were from New York, yet still Herb Score fans. It's great when you can connect with a player like that.

I was 14 when the Score injury occurred. My best friend at the time was a great Herb Score fan and through him I became one too. Unusual for two New York kids but Score affected people that way. We had a practice game in Babe Ruth League that May 7 and when we got back close to home we stopped off for an ice cream at a soda parlor nearby; the Greek fellow who ran the place knew us and rushed to us and told us "Herb Score waskilled by a line drive tonite." In the days before instant replay we couldn't tell anything until the late news that relieved us of that fear. Score had always behaved as we thought a hero should. He was modest and never thought he'd been dealt a bad hand.
