Sad news to report today, as news has reached me that former Indians infielder Andy Marte has passed away in a car accident in the Dominican Republic at the age of 33. It’s a tremendously sad ending to a life no matter how you slice it, but many in Cleveland probably do not remember the former star prospect fondly.
I’ll always remember where I was (in my dorm in Marietta, Ohio) when I heard that my beloved Coco Crisp had been traded for some star prospect. I hated the deal then and I obviously hate it now, but that isn’t to put any blame on Marte as a person. He didn’t pan out. It happens. I got to see Coco in an Indians uniform again and we almost got him a World Series Ring in Cleveland.
As most of the readership knows, I live in Korea and I am a pretty avid fan of KBO (Korean Baseball) — Go Nexen Heroes! — but I digress. Andy Marte actually found a job here in Korea two years ago when he signed on with the expansion team the kt Wiz. The Wiz were (and are) horrible – I would liken their team in 2015 to a bad AA team – but Marte raked, and he hit .348 with 22 home runs. I posted over a year ago about the 마르테 (Marte) jersey that I bought and how excited I was to have it.
Now it just feels weird to see it in my closet. Andy Marte – gone at 33.
Sadly, for a guy who was supposed to be a power prospect — his Indians highlight probably comes on the mound when he pitched and retired the Yankees 1-2-3 during a game in 2010.
