The Indians host the Red Sox in a one-game series this afternoon which serves as a makeup game from a rainout earlier this season.

Red Sox lefty Drew Pomeranz will make his first career start against the team that drafted team. He previously made a handful of relief appearances against the Tribe during his time with Oakland.

A lot of Indians fans have been bemoaning the fact that the Tribe traded Pomeranz to Colorado for Ubaldo Jimenez back in 2011. Pomeranz made the All-Star team while playing for the Padres this season and would certainly look good in the Indians rotation this season. But remember, both the Rockies and A’s gave up on Pomeranz before he finally hit his stride in pitcher-friendly Petco Park.

It’s unlikely the Indians would have been this patient with Pomeranz even if he stuck around. And let’s not forget about Ubaldo’s phenomenal second half in 2013 (1.82 ERA in 13 starts). The Tribe likely wouldn’t have made it to the play-in game without Ubaldo’s performance down the stretch.

This could also be David Ortiz‘s final game in Cleveland (unless we meet again in October).
