The first place Indians play the rubber match against the Baltimore Orioles this afternoon at 1:10pm at Progressive Field. Rookie Mike Clevinger (0-1, 8.71) makes his third Major League start today and faces Baltimore veteran Chris Tillman (6-1, 2.61).
After losing Friday night’s series opener, the Indians brought out the boom sticks in an 11-4 win on Saturday night that was delayed for about 30 minutes by a brief storm that blew in off of Lake Erie. The Indians banged out thirteen hits Saturday including at least one from nine different players.
The Indians also went 5-for-5 in stolen bases Saturday night against Matt Wieters. It’s not as if Wieters is a noodle-armed backstop either as he’s thrown out a respectable 31% of base-stealers this season, even after last night’s track meet.
Meanwhile in Kansas City, the White Sox charitably allowed the Indians to claim sole possession of first today by blowing a 7-1 ninth inning lead. Incredibly, the Royals started the 9th against the White Sox closer, David Robertson, who was just in to get some work but was sent from the mound with his tail between his legs as the Royals rallied for seven in the ninth to win the game and put the Tribe in first place this Memorial Day weekend.
Mike Clevinger looks to rebound from a rough outing last Monday against Chicago when he gave up six earned runs in five innings and took his first loss in the big leagues. The long-haired righty was 5-0 with a 3.03 ERA in AAA Columbus this season, striking out 36 in 35 2/3 innings over seven starts.
