On Tuesday evening, a team came to Cleveland from their midwestern city. The game was hard-fought, but when it was over, Cleveland wound up on top.
So congratulations to you, Cleveland Cavaliers. As for the Indians, well, they lost. 8-3.
Although he struck out seven Cardinals hitters without allowing a single walk, Tribe starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco gave up base hits like John D. Rockefeller gave out dimes. In 6 2/3 innings, Carrasco gave up 10 hits, including two doubles. The Indians played from behind again, as the Cardinals scored two runs in the top of the second inning. When Carrasco was removed with two out in the seventh, the Tribe was down 4-0. A single followed by three doubles in the home half of the inning brought the Indians within one run, 4-3. Could the Tribe come back to win?
Well, no, they could not. The bullpen handed the game to the Cards in the eighth, giving up four runs. The crippling blow was a three-run homer served up by Scott Atchison.
PS: In one of the cruel ironies that life throws at us from time to time, Indians broadcaster Tom Hamilton lost his mother, Theresa Hamilton, last Sunday, which was of course Mother’s Day. Hamilton will not work the St. Louis series, which concludes on Thursday afternoon. Our deepest condolences to the Hamilton family.
