Here we are — weekend #2 of the baseball season.
The Indians are not where they thought they would be on Opening Day — Yan Gomes is on the shelf, Carlos Carrasco is lucky he wasn’t concussed or worse by a Melky Cabrera line drive, and the offense has looked downright anemic at times.
Add it all up and the Tribe sits at a disappointing 3-5, good for 3rd place in the division.
As we hear time and time and time again, though, it is early. We’ve seen peaks and valleys from this group over the last two years, and there’s definite reason to believe a turnaround is in the offing. That turnaround might start this weekend in Minnesota, as the Twins present a tasty matchup for the Indians (albeit one on the road). The Twins are a team that is definitely rebuilding, and the Tribe needs to feast on them over the course of the season to make those trendy picks (looking at you, SI) look smart.
Corey Kluber (0-1, 2.63) will face Mike Pelfrey (0-0, 7.20) — on paper it’s a highly favorable matchup, but we don’t play these games on paper. Pelfrey absolutely stymied the Indians at least once last year, so let’s hope the team brought their bats. At least he isn’t left-handed.
