Just in case you missed one or more of these stories…
* Corey Kluber is a finalist for the AL Cy Young Award and Michael Brantley is a finalist for the AL MVP Award. The other AL Cy Young finalists are Felix Hernandez (Mariners) and Chris Sale (White Sox). The Cy Young Award Winners will be announced Wednesday, November 12, at 6:00 ET. The otherAL MVP finalists were former Indian-now-Tiger Victor Martinez and third-time-in-three-years Mike Trout of the Angels. The MVP Awards will be announced on Thursday, November 13 at 6:00 pm ET.
* The Indians have picked up the 2015 option on Mike Aviles‘ contract, which will keep him around for at least another season. He’ll back up Jose Ramirez and Jason Kipnis at short and second respectively. Although it feels like Aviles has been around for a while, he’s only played two seasons in Cleveland, hitting .247 (85-344) with 16 doubles, 1 triple, 5 home runs and 39 RBI in 113 games. He equaled his career-high and finished third on the club with 14 stolen bases and hit his first “walk-off” home run on August 15 vs. Baltimore. I know Aviles has his detractors. He came on like gangbusters in 2013. Although he lost a bit on both offense and defense last season, he’s flexible and relatively inexpensive. Why not keep him around for another season?
* Jason Giambi may finally leave the DL. No, not to play. Rumor has it he won’t be on the roster next season. We all know he ought to be a coach anyway. Catcher Chris Gimenez will not be back either. He was outrighted off the 40-man roster on November 4. Outfielder J.B. Shuck was claimed off waivers by the White Sox. However, the Tribe re-signed right-hander Tyler Cloyd to a minor league deal with an invite to big league Spring Training camp. Cloyd had a 5.98 ERA over two seasons with the Phillies and was 10-8 with a 3.89 ERA in 2014 for the AAA Columbus Clippers.
* A few front office moves: Ross Atkins is Cleveland’s new Vice President of Player Personnel; Carter Hawkins will be Director of Player Development; and Paul Gillispie the Director of Pro Scouting.
