In case you missed it, the Tribe made a couple of small roster moves late this week.

We activated pitcher Brett Myers from the DL and promptly released him from his contract. He is now a free agent.

We signed outfielder Jason Kubel from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for cash or the ubiquitous player to be named later. Kubel is hitting .220 for the Diamondbacks this year with 8 doubles, 5 home runs, and 32 RBI in 89 games. Lifetime he’s .265 AVG/.330 OBP/.456 SLG.  Kubel is signed thru 2013 with a mutual option for 2014. He bats left and throws right. These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.

Kubel is scheduled to report to the club on Saturday, at which time the Indians will make a corresponding move on the 25-man roster. Any bets?

The Indians also recalled lefty Scott Barnes from AAA Columbus and promptly placed him on the 60-day DL with a left wrist sprain.

And in the OMG WTF category, the Indians signed catcher Kelly Shoppach to a minor league contract and assigned him to AAA Columbus. Shoppach spent the first half of the season with the Mariners, where he his .196 in 35 games being being released on June 20. He summered in Syracuse with the National’s AAA club and in Indianapolis with the Pirates’ AAA club before requesting his release on August 28. Shoppach, as you may recall, was with the Tribe from 2006-2009, hitting .245 AVG/.331 OBP/.456 SLG.

So that happened.

I take it that Lou Marson is still not doing well and that they signed Shoppach for depth in Columbus. Maybe the change of scenery will get Kubel back to his career norms. I’d take that line right about now. My guess is that Jason Giambi will announce his retirement this weekend and that Jason Kubel will take his roster spot.

Why have Giambi retire? The roster expands on September 1, you could carry both of them. Unless the concern is the 25 man post-season roster (yeah, that’s my big concern right now ).
