Over and over and over and over and over again.
It’s the kind of familiar feeling that I should be numb to at this point in my life, but it always remains impervious to whatever I do to suppress it. On top of that, it’s the salt added to dump on the sore, infected wounds. I guess it’s time to add another chapter to the history books.
Like a lot of us, I’m sitting here at this crazy hour lamenting He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named-Except-That-He-is-Far-Worse-Than-Voldemort’s second consecutive NBA championship. I need a pick me up, because life just isn’t all that fair. As trivial as stuff like this gut-punch may be in the all-encompassing grand scheme of things, it sucks. And Jhonny Peralta hit a walk-off tonight. Former Cleveland athletes sure do like to find creative ways to twist the knife, don’t they?
This is where the good news comes in: It’s now officially the Indians’ turn to take center stage of the mind-share. They deserve the attention, now it’s their time to do something with it for as long as they can. They have their chance at making the impression; to draw those jaded fans in with a promise that contention can, and will, last into September. And maybe October. A chance to make the words of their detractors such as Jim Bowden be force-fed back to them after saying they need to blow the team up again.
Hey Tribe, this is your chance to make everybody remember how the Jake used to be the toughest, yet most fun ticket in town. It’s your chance to make the fans want to see the Jake rock again. It’s your chance to take us on that magic carpet ride that we’ve been longing for. You’re four games back of a Tigers team that seems perfectly content to let you hang around, even though they should be sitting far more comfortably than they are. On paper.
And they still might. But you can make them really work harder for it than they want to. And really, they haven’t seemed intent to do so.
We need something to make it easier to digest how HWSNBNETHIFWTV up and left and is now enjoying two titles. You brought in some championship caliber expertise for moments like this: To give us promise that contention is closer in the future than it appears. To give us a chance to feel proud again.
You have our attention. You have the floor. And we’re not even halfway home yet. Let’s see what you got.
