Looking at the comings and goings on the Tribe roster this week can kind of make you feel like Alice in Wonderland, where the comings and goings seem to never stop. After the Carlos Carrasco debacle on Tuesday night, you knew he was going to be suspended, demoted, something. Carrasco has received an eight-game suspension from major league baseball. In the meantime, he’s been sent down to AAA Columbus–not because of the “incident” but because the team needed to make room for Cory Kluber on the roster. Carrasco was going to be sent down anyway as soon as his six-game suspension for throwing at Billy Butler back in 2011. The injury to Scott Kazmir kept Carrasco on the roster. And then that happened.
In the meantime, the Indians have recalled lefty Nick Hagadone from AAA Columbus to see what he can do and sent right-hander Cory Kluber to Columbus. Perhaps they can just swap lockers. Hagadone has pitched 2.1 innings for the Columbus Clippers this season (2H, 0R, 3BB, 5K). In addition, right-hander Matt Albers has been placed on the Paternity List (congratulations to him and Mrs. Albers), Jason Giambi has been activated from the 15-day DL, and the Zombie Apocalypse will begin Sunday afternoon. Okay, the part about the zombies isn’t true.
In 29 plate appearances in Spring Training, Giambi hit .207 with 3HR, 5RBI, 5BB, 4SO, .333 OBP/.552 SLG/.885 OPS. He made 113 plate appearances with the Rockies last season: .225AVG/.372OBP/.303SLG/.675OPS. I don’t know what to say about Giambi except that he’s still younger than I am (but not by much). Clearly his glory days are behind him, but perhaps he still has something left in the tank.
Maybe we’ll be able to get through a series without any more roster changes.
