* The Indians made their first cuts to the Spring Training roster earlier this week. Top prospect Jesus Aguilar (who helped represent the Tribe at the Futures Game last summer), outfielder Jeremy hermida, and LHP Edward Paredes have all been reassigned to minor league camp. Hermida will, however, remain with the big league club for “several” more games before he reports to minor league camp. After these cuts, the 2013 Spring Training roster consists of 61 players–32 pitchers, six catchers, 14 infielders, and nine outfielders.

* The Indians today signed 11 pre-arbitration players (those who have 0-3 years of MLB service) to one-year Major League contracts for the 2013 season (they are listed below). This does not necessarily mean they will all make the team out of Spring Training. We still have options on these players and they could (and in several cases almost certainly will) be sent to the minors. The number of pre-arbitration contracts and pre-arb extensions has been growing. The Hardball Times did a great piece last year on the value of pre-arbitration players (in brief, they’re a bargain).  The most unusual name on this list to me is Michael Brantley–I forget sometimes just how young he is.
